So You Work at a Grocery Store
At some point nearly everyone I know has done the grocery store gig. Most of us did our time during High School or College or for a short time afterwards and then moved on. In some cases, many decided to stay on, move up through the ranks and have great careers. Well this is not about those that enjoy that work, or at least pretend to enjoy it. This is about the ones that do not.
It seems that every grocery that I go to has the one and sometimes two employees (normally cashiers that work during the day), that are less than pleased to be there. I try to take into account that they are having a bad day, but when I see the same one(s) having a "bad day" every time I'm shopping, then there is a problem. Now, I don't know the situation of these employees, but it seems that something is going on there.
I can not speak for those having these repeated bad days, but I do have a few suggestions. These would apply to not only those in the grocery business, but in all fields of work.
- Smile. A smile goes a long way to making you feel better as well as those around you.
- Always greet the person that you are doing business. That maybe the person across the conference table or across the cash register.
- Make eye contact. This shows that you are engaging them. Which in turn makes everyone feel better
- Don't raise your voice as nothing good can come of it.
- Your customer did not make you get that job, so don't take it out on them.
I hope this helps someone, because I know, after writing it, I feel better.
